How to Make the Starter
In a bowl, (no metal) mix together
1 tsp active dry yeast
¼ C warm Water
2 tbls Sugar
1 tbls Vinegar
1 tsp Salt
1 C All Purpose Flour
Cover and let stand for 2-3 days.  It will
become bubbly and will have a sour
odor. (Don’t be alarmed)
Separate into 3 portions, keeping 1 for
yourself and giving 2 away in a gallon
size Ziploc bag.  Write the date on
which you pour the batter in.  Give a
copy of the following instructions with
each bag.  Pass to your friends!!
Amish Friendship Bread

DO NOT use any type of metal spoon
or Bowl.
DO NOT refrigerate.
If air gets in the bag, let it out (burp the
bag).  Burp as needed.
It is normal for the starter to rise,
bubble, and ferment.

Day 1:  Do nothing (this is the day your
starter got separated from a bigger
batch of batter)
Day 2: Mush the contents of the bag.
Day 3: Mush the bag.
Day 4: Mush the bag.
Day 5: Mush the bag.
Day 6: Add to the bag, 1 cup flour, 1
cup sugar, 1 cup milk and mush the
bag.
Day 7: Mush the bag.
Day 8: Mush the bag.
Day 9: Mush the bag.
Day 10: Pour out entire contents of the
bag into a non-metal bowl.
Add, 1 ½ cups flour, 1 ½ cups Sugar,
1 cups Milk.  Measure out 4 separate
“starters” of 1 cup each into 4 1-gallon
Ziploc bags.  Label and date each
bag.  Keep one starter for yourself and
give the other 3 to friends with a copy
of these instructions.  Just like before.

Preheat oven to 325* and grease 2
large loaf pans.

To the remaining batter in the bowl,
add:

3 Eggs
1 ½ tsp Baking powder
½ tsp Vanilla
1 cup Oil
½ tsp Baking Soda
1 cup Sugar
½ cup Milk
½ tsp Salt
2 cups Flour
2 tsp Cinnamon
1 Lg. box Instant  vanilla
Pudding
In a small bowl, mix ½ cup Sugar and 1
½ tsp Cinnamon.  Coat the greased
pans with half the mixture.  Pour your
batter evenly between the two pans
and sprinkle the remaining sugar
mixture over the top of the batter.

Bake for 1 hour and 7 minutes.  Allow
the bread to cool until it loosens evenly
from the pan.  If you keep a starter for
yourself, you will be baking every 10
days.  Fresh Amish bread every 10
days, YUM!!

Alternate recipe: Omit vanilla.  Reduce
cinnamon to 1 tsp.  Replace vanilla
pudding with chocolate pudding.  Add
½ cup chocolate chips and ½ cup
coconut.
